Understanding Mental Health
Caregivers of loved ones with a mental health issues can often be confused or distressed by the moods, thoughts, and behaviours changes that they observe. They may feel as though they are dealing with someone entirely different to the person they used to know.
It is important to understand mental health issues: more than one in seven Singaporeans will suffer from a mental health issue during their lives. This can occur in people of all ages and backgrounds, even in the prime of life before the age of 30. Some of the most common conditions include depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia.
Mental health issues are medical conditions linked to chemical imbalances in the brain that affect one’s feelings and thoughts, ability to function and personal relationships. As with physical conditions, persons with mental health issues may find it more difficult to cope with life’s daily challenges.
Caregivers are vital in providing the best chances for persons with mental health issues to recover or to reach a state where they are able to manage their condition. Properly educate yourself on how to be a caregiver with the Caregivers-to-Caregivers Training Programme (C2C).
